Pride service features

music of Anne E. DeChant

by Rev. Allen Harris

Cleveland Singer-songwriter and Northeast Ohio native Anne E. DeChant will grace this year's Pride worship service with her vibrant and socially-aware music.

The service is set for Sunday, June 19, 5:00 p.m. at Trinity Cathedral, East 22nd St. and Euclid Ave. It will be shaped primarily around DeChant's music. Religious leaders from around the Cleveland metropolitan area will join DeChant in leadership. There is no charge for the service, though donations will be received to offset the costs of the service. A reception will follow.

The power of water, as a symbol for life and means for personal and communal transformation, will be the guiding image for the service. Reflecting on the present need for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered, and affirming people to find refreshment and renewal along an often difficult and tiring journey

of self-empowerment and justice-seeking, planners felt water might be a perfect focus. Through sound, visual images, poetry, scripture, and music the healing and restorative nature of water will be celebrated.

DeChant is well known, not just in Ohio, but nationally, having appeared at such diverse venues as Lilith Fair, Easter at the White House, the opening act for Suzanne Vega, Nora Jones, 10,000 Maniacs, and Stevie

Nicks and as worship leader for Avon Lake United Church of Christ's CrossRoads alternative worship service. In 2004 she was voted by Scene magazine as Cleveland's Best Singer/Songwriter and Best Female Singer/ Songwriter by Cleveland Free Times. The worship service is one of several an-

nual events planned by the Interfaith Religious and Spiritual Leaders Group which meets at the Cleveland Lesbian-Gay Center. Representatives from People of All Colors Together will also share in the service. For more information, call 216-272-0622. ♡
